The Ortles Family

Confidence on the mountain is one of the key factors for a successful adventure – we should have the same level of confidence in our equipment as we do in the people we choose to climb with in the mountains. Salewa developed the Ortles collection based on this principle.

The story

Gabriel Tschurtschenthaler is a mountaineer. He’s also visually impaired and can hardly see, yet he climbed the Ortles as part of a unique team.

The mountains are often described as ‘breathtaking landscapes’. But what if a climber is unable to see the mountains at all. Is it still worth going? What else do the mountains offer beyond their ‘breathtaking’ views?

Gabriel moves steadily, but cautiously. The path winds up through rock and scree. It’s often treacherous and unstable underfoot. Vittorio is two steps ahead, and Matthias follows at a short distance. “Root on the left” Vittorio mumbles. Gabriel nods and immediately adapts his stride to avoid it. Matthias, following up behind, makes sure that they make it safely past the obstacle.

Alpinist

“We’re willing to take on the increased risk that our team brings with it. We have to be more focused, more precise and more exact in these projects. This simply creates mutual confidence.”
Matthias Wurzer
Alpinist
“Gabriel, of course, perceives mountains quite differently to someone who sees everything. It seems to me that he feels it much more intensively than someone who just says that it looks beautiful.”
Vittorio Messini
Alpinist
Ortles - Italy
The steep, exposed ridge rises up in front of them, contrasting sharply against the clear blue sky. The grey-white peaks of the Eastern Alps lay all around. However, the three climbers are not distracted by the impressive panorama. Instead, they are focused on their movements, nothing else matters now. Step by step, rock by rock, they move on up. Their goal is the ‘Hintergrat’, one of the most beautiful routes to the summit of the Ortles.
